OVERVIEW
MEDEL GALLERY SHUでは、6月7日より19日まで相川恵子の個展「忘れていく」を開催いたします。
相川は展示の度に作風のマイナーチェンジを試みていますが、それは意図していることではなく、単純にそれ以前の作品の描き方を忘れるかのように無意識のうちに新しさを生み出しています。本展は、そんな「忘却癖」のある相川が忘れてきた記憶の繋ぎ合わせをスタイルとして意識したことで、更なる進化の跡を魅せる作品群で構成されています。
MEDEL GALLERY SHU is pleased to announce the exhibition by Keiko Aikawa, titled “Forgetting – Wasurete Iku,” which will be held from June 7th to 19th. Aikawa attempts to make minor changes to her style with each exhibition, not intentionally, but rather as if she unconsciously creates something new by forgetting how she painted her previous works. This exhibition is composed of works that showcase the further evolution of Aikawa’s style, which consciously connects the memories she has forgotten due to her “habit of forgetting.”
Although Keiko Aikawa is an artist based in Niigata, she has exhibited in Tokyo, Taipei, and Hong Kong. This year, she has received numerous invitations from galleries both domestically and internationally, providing her with many exhibition opportunities.
描こうと思ったもの描かれてしまったもの
私は後者の絵の方が好きだし行為としても快感である
一貫して顔を描いてきたがスタイルというものを作っては壊してきている
描き方を覚えると描くことが本当につまらなくなるからだ
いままで忘れることで生きてきたと思う｡
そして忘れることが好きである｡
それ故わたしは自身を全く信用できないのである｡
描いてきた絵を確認することでぼんやりと記憶をたどる｡制作は痕跡を残す
ことに近い｡
絵は今まで私が忘れてきた記憶のようなものをつなぎ合わせてくれる存在だ｡
自分自身が全く連結できない存在であり､昨日と今日で違う人間のように思
う｡
信用できない自分を嫌うのではなく絵を通してうまく付き合っていきたいと
思う｡

相川恵子は新潟在住のアーティストですが、都内や台北、香港での展示を経て、本年も国内外のギャラリーから多数声をお声かけいただき、展示機会に恵まれ、いま最も勢いのあるアーティストの一人と言えるでしょう。是非ご高覧願います。

私にとって制作とは今までに見たこともないフォルムを創り出すこと｡人物
をモチーフにイメージの開放・拡張を試み“無限に可変的なもの” として描
く｡見えている面だけでなく､多面的であり本当は見えない部分があり複雑
であることを絵画で表現する｡
卒業後より新潟を拠点として作家活動を始める｡油彩による人物画を中心に
制作｡曖昧な存在のひとの顔を描く｡個々の象徴としての顔､見えている顔
だけでなく､本当は見えない部分があり複雑であること｡自分やあなたの中
にある存在しているかわからない顔の形を創り出し作品にしている｡
For me, creation is about producing forms that have never been seen before. Using people as motifs, I attempt to release and expand my imagination, depicting them as “infinitely mutable.” I express in my paintings not only the visible aspects but also the multifaceted, complex parts that are truly invisible.

MEDELとは、日本語で「物の美しさをほめ味わうこと」を意味する「愛でる」からきています。
唯一無二のアートを賞美し、慈しむという行為を介して、アーティストと鑑賞者、ギャラリーの間に喜びの行き交いが成立してほしいという想いを込め名づけました。
“時代を共にする人々にとっての財産であり、未来の社会を照らす火である”とアーティストの活動・作品を定義し、人々の心に残る独創性に富んだスタイルの作品を鑑賞者と共に愛でつつ、次世代に残るようなマーケットや美術史的評価を確立してゆくことが当ギャラリーのミッションです。そのような私たちの活動を通して、独創的な表現を受け容れる多様な社会的風土の醸成に資することができれば、これに勝る喜びはありません。
The word “MEDEL” is from the Japanese word “愛でる,” which means "to praise
and appreciate beauty" in Japanese.
We named the gallery MEDEL to create a pleasant exchange between the artist, and the appreciator,through the unique artwork.
We define artists'activities and works of art as "an inheritance for the people who share the same era and a fire that will light up the society of the future”, and we hope to establish a market and an art historical reputation that will last for the next generation while appreciating works of art with the viewers, which are full of originality and style that will remain in people's minds.
Through our activities, we are more than happy to contribute to the development of a diverse social culture that accepts creative expression.
