第一次世界大戦末期、1918年のロンドン。長引く戦争で荒廃し、疲弊している街。さらに恐るべきスペイン風邪の流行が追い打ちをかけるように街に広がる。暗闇の中で、最早希望の灯火すらない日々を送る人々。
そこに戦争から帰還した一人の医師が現れる。ジョナサン・リード。この物語の主人公である。

救世主のように、この希望のない荒んだ街に現れたの医師 ジョナサン・リード。前線から戻ってきたばかりの彼は、荒廃した街ロンドンで、秘密結社、ヴァンパイアハンターの存在に気付く。
この世の邪悪な生き物、未知の隠された世界が実際に存在することを知るのだが、
その過程において、このジョナサン自身こそがヴァンパイアとして生まれ変わってしまうことになる。

ヴァンパイアとは、抑えきれない衝動で血を欲する生き物である。彼自身がその衝動を抑えきれない化け物と化すのだが、片や医師としての理性がまだ働くジョナサンは、自らが博士としてあらゆる専門的な知識を使い、この恐ろしい現象を合理的に追求しようとする。
しかしながら、ヴァンパイアである方のジョナサンは、理性も忘れて獣的に血を欲し、助けると誓った人々さえも食い物にしなければならないという矛盾との間で苦しむことになるのである。
