【中年名車図鑑｜5代目日産セドリック】国産で初めてターボを積んだ最高級量産乗用車

トヨタ自動車のクラウンとともに日本の高級乗用車市場を牽引した日産自動車のセドリックは、1979年になると渾身のフルモデルチェンジを実施し、第5世代となる430型系に移行する。1980年代の高級車の規範を目指した5代目は、先進の技術を精力的に取り入れていた――。今回は国産車で初めてターボ過給車を設定した“ヨンサンマル”セドリックの話で一席。

最も厳しいとされた昭和53年排出ガス規制の克服に一定の目処がついた日産自動車は、1970年代終盤に入ると新型車の開発を急ピッチで推し進めるようになる。なかでも力を入れたのが、市場から“旧態依然”と揶揄されていた大型乗用車のカテゴリー、具体的にはセドリック／グロリアのクラスだった。来るべき1980年代をリードする日産の旗艦モデルの姿とは――。この課題に対して開発陣は、安全性・省資源・低公害・快適性のいっそうの充実を図ることを目的に、自社の技術力の高さを市場に示す“ハイテク”装備の積極的な採用を決断する。同時に内外装の演出についても、新たなアプローチの高級感を模索した。

■1980年代に向けた最高級量産乗用車の創出

エクステリアに関しては「近代感覚を盛り込んだ格調の高いスタイル」をテーマに、装飾を多用した従来の330型系とは大きく異なる水平基調のシンプルなボディラインを構築する。ボディバリエーションは従来型で用意した2ドアハードトップを廃止し、4ドアハードトップ（全長4690～4825×全幅1690～1715×全高1410mm）と4ドアセダン（全長4690～4825×全幅1690～1715×全高1430mm）、そしてワゴン（全長4690×全幅1690×全高1495mm）とバンを設定。セダンはオペラウィンドウを、ハードトップはクリスタルカット風のリアウィンドウを、ワゴンとバンは2段ルーフとパノラマ風リアウィンドウを組み込んだ。フロント部は縦桟を基調としたグリルに、セダンがフォーマルで近代的な角型4灯式ヘッドランプを、ハードトップが角型2灯式のハロゲンヘッドランプを装着。また、ワゴンは角型4灯式、バンは丸型4灯式のヘッドランプを採用した。リア部はセダンが直線基調のコンビネーションランプ、ハードトップが台形フォルムのランプ、ワゴンとバンが縦型デザインのランプを装備する。各ボディタイプに分けて外装パーツをデザインしたのには、それぞれのキャラクターをより明確化させる目的があった。

インテリアについては、「高級車にふさわしいローデシベル空間の実現」を基本方針に掲げてアレンジする。まず、ボディ各部材の結合部やサスペンション取付部の剛性をアップ。さらに、ダッシュボードなどの内装パーツの設置部も大幅に見直し、室内の静粛性と耐振性の向上を図った。シート関連では前席セパレートシートのフルフラット化や上級グレードでのグランドシートの装着、調整式リアヘッドレストの採用、パワー調整機構付きシートの拡大展開が訴求点。装備面ではフルオートデュアルエアコンおよびブリーズメイトの採用や前席足元専用エアコン吹出口の設置、ソフトパッドと立体木目との調和を図った新デザインのインパネの組み込み、ドライブコンピュータ／アナログ式電子表示チューナーラジオ／テープカウンター付きカセットステレオ／パンポット・サウンドバランサーの設定などを実施した。

シャシーは基本的に従来型を踏襲しながら、リアサスペンションの5リンク化やダブルウィッシュボーン式フロントサスペンションへのテンションロッドの追加、取付部の改良などを敢行し、乗り心地や走行安定性の向上を図る。ホイールベースは2690mmにセット。同時に組み合わせるボディには新高張力鋼板をはじめとした新技術を盛り込み、剛性と耐久性を引き上げた。搭載エンジンはL28E型2753cc直列6気筒OHC（145ps）を筆頭に、L20E型1998cc直列6気筒OHC（130ps）、L20型1998cc直列6気筒OHC（115ps）、SD22型2164cc直列4気筒OHVディーゼル（65ps）、SD20型1991cc直列4気筒OHVディーゼル（60ps）という計5機種を設定。さらに、営業車用にZ20P型とL20P型の2エンジンを用意した。また、L28Eユニットには電子式エンジン集中制御システムのニッサンECCSを組み込む。エンジンの点火時期のほか、燃料噴射量、アイドル回転数、排気ガス還元量などをマイクロコンピュータの演算によりコントロールするこの新システムは、燃費や出力の向上とともに排出ガスの低減も図ることができる世界初の画期的な先進機構であった。

開発陣は操舵機構や制動機構にも徹底してこだわる。パワーステアリングには、新開発のバリアブルギアレシオ（16.0～14.4に変化）およびエンジン回転数感応型ポンプを採用。室内のハンドル自体にも、新開発のバランススプリング付きチルト機構を組み込んだ。ブレーキ関連ではL28Eエンジン搭載車に4輪ディスクブレーキを採用したうえで、前輪側にはベンチレーテッド機構と7.5インチ・タンデムマスターバックを装着。また、コラムチェンジ式AT仕様には足踏み式パーキングブレーキを設定した。

■豊富なバリエーションで市場デビュー

1980年代に向けた日産の新しい高級乗用車の5代目セドリックは、430の型式を付けて1979年6月に発売される（同時に兄弟車のグロリアも6代目の新型に移行）。車種展開は4ドアハードトップ／4ドアセダン／ワゴン／バンの4ボディに、L28E／L20E／L20／SD22／SD20／Z20P／L20Pという7機種のエンジンを用意。グレード展開は計62タイプのワイドバリエーションを誇った。キャッチコピーには、“またしても先駆。セドリック”“快適ローデシベル空間”などが冠せられる。とくに強調されたのがローデシベル空間で、従来の330型系、さらに重量増加のデメリットはあったものの騒音振動対策では有利なフレーム付きのシャシーを採用していた当時のトヨタ・クラウンを凌駕する静粛性と耐振性を成し遂げた事実を、このフレーズに込めていた。

市場に放たれた430型系セドリックは、その先進性とユーザー好みのラグジュアリー感の演出が功を奏して、好調な受注を記録する。とくに最上級グレードのブロアムの人気が高く、当時の販売スタッフによると、そのハイテクぶりから「コンピュータ付きのクルマ」と呼ばれたそうだ。

■国産初の市販ターボ車の登場

出足好調な430型系セドリックの存在感をさらに高めようと、日産は矢継ぎ早に高性能モデルの追加を実施していく。デビューから4カ月ほどが経過した1979年10月には、国産乗用車初の6気筒ディーゼルエンジンであるLD28型2792cc直列6気筒OHCディーゼル（91ps）を搭載した仕様を、4ドアハードトップ／4ドアセダン／ワゴンに設定する。第2次オイルショックの最中に登場した経済性に優れる高級ディーゼル車は、市場から非常に高く評価された。

さらに2カ月ほどが過ぎた1979年12月になると、またもや国産乗用車初のエンジンを積み込んだ車種が、4ドアハードトップ／4ドアセダンに設定される。既存のL20Eユニットに排気エネルギーを活用する“ターボチャージャー”機構を装着したL20E-T型1998cc直列6気筒OHCターボエンジン仕様が加わったのだ。145ps／21.0kg・mのパワー＆トルクを発生し、専用セッティングのトランスミッションやハードサスペンションを奢ったターボ仕様は、5ナンバー規格でL28Eエンジン搭載車よりも速いモデルとして、たちまちヒット作に昇華する。そして1980年代初頭には、430型系セドリックのイメージリーダーに成長していった。ちなみに、当時の日産スタッフによると「ターボエンジンの運輸省（現・国土交通省）による認可取得は、予想以上に大変だった」という。前述したように、当時は第2次オイルショックの真っただ中。パワーの引き上げ効果を有するターボチャージャーには、逆風が吹いていたのだ。しかし、日産の開発陣は根気よく担当者を説得。「排気エネルギーの再利用は、結果的にエンジンの効率を高める」という、今でいうところのダウンサイジングターボによる燃料消費削減の論旨を展開し、何とかターボエンジンの認可を勝ち取ったのである。

ターボエンジンや直6ディーゼルエンジンの設定以降も、開発陣は着々と430型系セドリックの魅力度を引き上げていく。1980年2月には、LD28エンジン搭載車に5速MT仕様を追加。同年4月にはターボのブロアムとAT仕様、さらに固定式ガラスルーフを備えた“スタールーフ”を発売する。同年8月になると、LD28エンジン搭載のワゴン／バン5速MT仕様を設定した。初のマイナーチェンジは1981年4月に実施される。外装ではカラードウレタンバンパーなどを新採用して見栄えを向上。内装ではオーディオや空調類の使い勝手を見直し、利便性を引き上げた。さらに、L20E-Tエンジンへのノックセンサーの装備やL20EエンジンへのECCSの採用など、メカニズム面の改良も図られる。1982年6月になると、待望のロックアップ付き4速ATがL28EやL20E-Tなどのエンジンに組み込まれる。同時に、L20E-TエンジンにECCSが、上級グレードにオートスピードコントロール装置やボイスコンパニオンなどの装備が設定された。

高級乗用車としての完成度を着実に高めていった430型系セドリック。販売成績の面ではライバルのクラウンを凌駕するまでには至らなかったが、それでも比較的好調なセールスを続け、モデル末期までコンスタントな登録台数を記録した。そして、1983年6月に入るとフルモデルチェンジが実施され、430型系から第6世代のY30型系へと移行する。そのY30型系ではメインのガソリンエンジンが一新され、従来のL型系直列6気筒から新世代のVG型系V型6気筒へと切り替わった。結果的に430型系は、名機の誉れが高いL型系ストレート6ガソリンエンジンを積む最後のセドリックとなったのである。
