『Tokyo Gifathon』　1か月の滞在中に毎日GIFアニメを制作した外国人の目に映った東京

初めてニューヨークを訪れた時の記憶は今でも新鮮に脳裏に焼き付いています。ニューヨーカーにとっては当たり前の匂いや風景、クラクションや怒鳴り声などの騒音、日本とは違った風情の建物など、筆者にとっては初見のものばかりだったので、ニューヨーカーとは違った角度で見ていたことと思います。逆に私達が普段見慣れている東京の風景や建物も、外国人にとってはとても新鮮に映るんだろうと思います。

ロンドンを拠点に活動するアニメーション・ディレクター、ジェームズ・カラン（James Curran）氏が1か月の東京滞在中に毎日制作したGIFアニメ『Tokyo Gifathon』では彼の目に映った東京が描かれています。同氏は東京の前にもニューヨーク（NYC Gifathon）とロサンゼルス（LA Gifathon）で同様の試みをしています。

同氏によると、『Gifathon』シリーズは「クライアントの仕事で多忙すぎたので、自分自身を強制的に個人プロジェクトに向かわせるために始めた」そうです。「アニメーターの仕事は机に座りっぱなしで旅行にいく暇などないので、逆に旅に出てプロジェクトに関わることにすればいい変化になると思った」とも語ってくれました。『Gifathon』シリーズは基本的に同氏が「滞在中に見たものからインスピレーションを得たGIFアニメ」で構成されています。なぜGIFアニメなのかという問いには「写真を撮るよりGIFアニメにするほうが得意だから」と単純明快な回答。

上の動画で全てのGIFアニメを一気に見るが可能ですが、同氏の『Instagram』で公開されているインスピレーションのもとになったものと、GIFアニメの対比を見比べるとさらに面白いかもしれません。
