VR4Kストリーミングサービスを開発中のVisbit、320万ドル（約3.6億円）の資金調達に成功

海外メディアUploadVRは、2016年12月6日の記事において、Visbitが資金調達に成功したことを報じた。

同メディアによると、VR4Kストリーミングサービスの実現を目指すVisbitは、このほど320万ドルの資金調達に成功した。

同社に出資した企業は、Presence Capital、ZhenFund、Colopl Nextといったところであるが、調達した資金はVR4Kストリーミングサービスの開発に費やす予定である。

同社のCEOであるChangyin Zhouは、現在のVR業界における最大の問題は、ユーザーが真に没入できる画質のVR体験を提供できていないことにある、と考えている。

そのうえで、同氏はVRコンテンツに必要な最低限の画質は4Kであるとして、Google Cardboardのようなモバイル型VRヘッドセットにも、4K以上の画質の提供するためにVR4Kストリーミングサービスを開発しているのだ(下の企業コンセプトを説明する動画を参照)

同氏は4Kストリーミングのさらに先を見据えており、8K画質のVRストリーミングサービスが実現すれば、ちょうど2Dディスプレイで4K画質のコンテンツを視聴したのと同じ没入感が得られだろう、とも述べている。

高画質のVRコンテンツに関して、同氏は以下のような発言もしている。

「私たちの4Kストリーミングサービスが実現すれば、ユーザーの360°動画を視聴するVR体験は飛躍的に進化するでしょう。

きっと、スポーツの試合や音楽ライブに本当に参加しているかのような体験ができるでしょう。」

なお、以上のような4Kストリーミングサービスは、特定のプラットフォームに依存したものではなく、すべてのVRヘッドセットを対象とする予定である。

一般にVR動画コンテンツは、2Dのそれに比べてフレームレートが高い等の理由によりサイズが大きくなってしまう。

今後、360°動画ストリーミングが普及する過程で、ストリーミング方式とともに5Gの実現等の通信インフラ関連の改善も求められるであろう。
