VR歩行システム「Omni」、アメリカ以外の国への出荷を断念。国際輸送が法的・コスト的に困難とのこと

海外メディアUploadVRは、2016年12月6日の記事において、VR歩行システム「Omni」がアメリカ以外の国には出荷されないことを報じた。

同メディアによると、2016年12月6日、VR歩行システム「Omni」を開発しているVirtuixは、同システムをアメリカ以外の国に出荷することを断念したと発表した。

同システムはクラウドファンディングサイトのKickstarterを通じて出資を募ったのだが、アメリカ以外の国に住んでいる出資者に対しては、年利3%で出資金を返金するとしている。

同社は出資者に対して、以下のようなコメントを発表している。

「私たちはもはやいつ、どのようにしてOmniを世界中にいる出資者に届ける術を知りません。

現在のOmniは一般消費者向けの商品というより、大きく頑丈な工業製品となってしまいました…

私たちの目標は、VRの世界に歩行をもたらすことであり、この目標こそがVRの繁栄にとって重大なことと信じていました…

私たちの目標はまだ生きていますが、たどり着くには思っていたよりはるかに時間がかかりそうです。」

アメリカ以外の国への出荷を断念した理由は、同デバイスが物理的に大きくなってしまったために、一般消費者に向けて国際的に輸送することが法的、コスト的に困難になったからである。

例えば中国への輸送は$40で済むが、エジプトだと$700も必要であり、世界各国に輸送するコストは$100〜$250と見積もられている。

とは言うものも、アメリカへの出荷は依然として実行される予定であり、「VR世界での歩行」はVRに関わる全てのヒトの夢と言っても過言ではないので、引き続き「Omni」の動向に注意を払うべきであろう。
