「三輪車＝子供が乗るもの」と考えている人は多いのではないだろうか。そんななか、8月5~6日の2日間にわたり開催されたVR最大イベント「VR Summer Expo 2016」にも登場したスリル満点の”大人のための”三輪車が海外メディアにより報じられ、反響を呼んでいる。

注目の三輪車を開発したのは、ロシアの研究者集団、Interactive Labだ。

頭を動かしたり、歩いたりといった人間のあらゆる動作を伴う場合のVRの科学的解明を研究テーマのひとつとしており、その一環として生み出されたのが今回の電子三輪車というわけだ。三輪車にはOculus Rift ヘッドセットの動作に必要なコンピュータシステムが搭載されている。

ヘッドセットを頭部に装着した状態で三輪車のサドルに跨り、運転し始めると、目の前はもはやVR世界。現実世界とVR世界における知覚は一致しており、VR世界のハンドルを凝視しているだけで、時にはスリル感のあるスムーズな走行が可能となる。ちなみに、手元を除くあらゆる動作については、カメラにより追跡されるようになっている。

今後は対戦相手と並んで競い合えるよう改良を重ねていくとのこと。日本のテーマパークに登場する日も近いことだろう。
