クルーズシップの船員の実体験をもとに制作される360°ショートフィルム「The Crew」がGoogleのJump Start Programから発表された。

The CrewはフィルムメイカーがVRカメラを利用できるJump Start Programのサポートで、今月にニューヨークで撮影が開始される。

クルーズシップでの厳しい環境に耐え働くフィリピン人船員のストーリーが描かれる。

「The Crew」はクルーズシップの実体験をもとに制作される360°ショートストーリーフィルムだ。

360°ビデオプロジェクトをサポートしているGoogleのJump Start Programの一環として制作される。

フィリピン人クルーズシップワーカーの主人公が難しい環境で働く辛さをオペラカラオケでまぎらわしていくというストーリーで、実際にクルーズシップで働いていたライター、Jason Ferguson氏の実体験がもとになっている。

キャビンスチュワードのBenjoが彼のお気に入りのオペラアリア、PagliacciのVesti La Giubbaを歌う準備をするところからフィルムは始まる。

Benjoはシップが台風をやり過ごすのを待つ間、乗客のエンターテインメントとして開催されるクルータレントショーに出る予定だったが、キャビンで練習している間にショーはキャンセルされてしまう。

ライターとディレクターコメント

クルーズシップのスタッフにはたくさんの国の人が集まっているが、フィリピン人の数は圧倒的に多く、特にキャビン清掃員などローランクのポジションに多い。

元シアタープロデューサーで現在はPuff Daddy氏のアシスタントをしている、このフィルムのライターである、Jason Ferguson氏はストーリーを作ったきっかけをこう語っている。

「クルーズシップでステージショーをしながら働いている間、船上にいるたくさんのクルーと友達になりました。

その経験をとおして、外国人、主にフィリピン人のクルーのランクがとても低く扱われていることを実感しました。

厳しい環境をともにし、仲良くなった人たちのためにも、この体験をもとにしたストーリーを語りたいと思うようになりました。」

The Crewは360°でのストーリーテーリングを向上させるためにデザインされたものでディレクター、Johan Anderson氏はこうコメントしている。

「VRはよく共感を得るためのエンパシーマシンと呼ばれています。

私たちはこの側面をエモーショナルなストーリーを語るために利用しました。

ドキュメンタリーは360°動画を使って語ったほうがより共感を呼ぶことができます。

そして私たちは同じ効果をこのフィルムでも使えればと思っています。」

フィルムは今月ニューヨークシティで撮影される予定で、最終資金を集めるためのIndiegogoキャンペーンも開始されている。

The CrewはJeffrey Hernandez氏とJosh Goldsmith氏がプロデューサーとして、Jason Ferguson氏がライター、Johan Anderson氏がディレクターとして、フィリピン人俳優、Rogelio B. Peñaverde, Jrを起用して、Google Jump Startプログラムのサポートのもと制作される。

Jump Start ProgramはGoogleが運営するクリエーターとVRカメラをつなぐためのカメラローンプログラムで、最初のグループでは20のVRプロジェクトがセレクトされている。

Googleがサポートして、フィルムメイカーにVRフィルムを作るのに必要なリソースを提供していく。

クリエーターはVRカメラとGoPro OdysseyとYi Haloカメラシステムをとおしてオペレートされている、GoogleのクラウドベースVRビデオスティッチングソフトウェア、Jump Assemblerが無制限で利用できる。

現在プロジェクト申請のセカンドラウンドが終了したところで、新たにサポートされるプロジェクトが2017年11月に発表される予定だ。
