モバイルVRHMDでPC向けVRゲームが遊べるように！「Zeiss VR One Connect」が年度末に登場予定

光学機器メーカーZeissは、VRHMDに搭載されたスマートフォンをゲーミングPCに接続することを可能にする「The Zeiss VR One Connect」を発表した。

Zeissは光学電子機器の分野におけるリーディングカンパニー。同社はこれまで蓄積してきた光学技術を活用しVRHMDなどの開発に取り組んでいる企業だ。たとえば2014年にスマートフォン対応型のVRHMD「The Zeiss VR One」を発売し、VR業界に参入を果たし、2016年には後継機種となる「ZEISS VR ONE Plus」を発売している。

今回発表された「Zeiss VR One Connect」を使えば、Steamで配信されているゲーミングPC向けのVRゲームを「The ZEISS VR ONE Plus」などスマートフォン搭載型VRHMDでプレイすることが可能になる。

Zeiss VR One Connectの概要

モバイルVRHMDでPC向けゲームタイトルがプレイ可能に！

これまでスマートフォン搭載型VRHMDの課題であった、処理速度とプラットフォームの問題からPC向けVRゲームがプレイできない、という問題へのソリューションとなる可能性を秘めたZeiss VR One Connect。

Zeiss VR One Connectの利用に際しては、3軸方向へと移動可能なワイヤレス接続対応の3DoFゲームコントローラー2つと、スマートフォンをVR対応PCに接続するためのUSBケーブル、そして専用のソフトウェアが必要となる。

なおZeiss VR One Connectの機能を使用するのに、ZEISS VR ONE PlusなどZeiss社のVRHMDを購入する必要はない。Zeiss VR One ConnectのソフトウェアはiOSとアンドロイドをサポートしており、またBluetooth接続に対応済みだ。このため現在市場に出回っているあらゆるVRHMDがZeiss VR One Connectの機能を利用することが可能となっている。

価格は129米ドル/129ユーロで、2017年度末から提供開始される予定。

コントローラー、ケーブルは同梱されており、USBケーブルをまとめるためのケーブルクリップも付属する。

なおThe ZEISS VR ONE Plusとセットになった商品も129米ドル/129ユーロで発売される予定。

プレイ可能になるタイトルの数は不明

Zeiss VR One Connectを使うことでユーザーはどれくらいの数のタイトルにアクセスすることが出来るようになるのか。

具体的な数について、Zeissは「Zeiss VR One Connectユーザーは相当数のプレミアムタイトルにアクセス可能となります」と述べるのみで詳細なアナウンスはなく不明だ。

スマートフォン対応型VRHMDに新たな可能性を呼び込む！

Zeiss VR One Connectはスマートフォン対応型VRHMDに新たな楽しみ方を提供するソリューションだ。

Zeissにおいてプロダクトマネージャーを務めるFranz Troppenhagen氏はZeiss VR One Connectを期待を込めて以下のように語っている。

「（Zeiss VR One Connectの登場によって）これまでのモバイルVRソリューションと異なり、スマートフォン対応型のハードウェアはもはやVRコンテンツのコンピューティングを担う必要がなくなりました」

「代わりに、データはコンピューターから真っすぐにあなたのスマートフォンへと向かって飛んでいくようになるのです」

使いどころが難しいような気も……？

これまで述べてきたようにVRHMDに搭載されたスマートフォンでゲームの動作処理を行わなくても、SteamのようにVRゲームをラインアップするPC向けプラットフォームからリアルタイムで直接データを送信させることが出来るようになる。

これまでモバイルVRHMDではプレイできなかったVRゲームを、楽しめるようになるかもしれないというわけだ。

しかしZeiss VR One Connectはこのように新たな可能性を開く一方で、そもそもモバイルVRHMDの利点であったはずの携帯の容易さというメリットを潰してしまう。

先にも述べたようにVR対応型PCとスマートフォンをUSB接続で繋げなければならないからだ。

そもそもわざわざVR対応のゲーミングPCを購入して自宅に備えているような人は、大抵の場合VIVEやRiftといったVRHMDを既に揃えているのではないだろうか？

使いどころに難しさを感じるが、しかしZeiss VR One ConnectがモバイルVRHMDの可能性を広げることも確かだ。

今後の展開に注目が集まる。
